An explanation of the rootstock we use for our cherries.

Gisela 5 Cherry Rootstock

Gisela 5 is a popular rootstock that creates a smaller, more manageable cherry tree, typically about half the size of traditional cherry trees. This means easier harvesting and pruning for you! It encourages trees to fruit earlier in their life and is well-suited for a variety of soil types, including heavier ones. Trees on Gisela 5 will need permanent support (like a stake) as they don't anchor as strongly on their own.Suitable rootstock for growing in containers.

Colt Rootstock

Colt rootstock is a fantastic choice for growing semi-vigorous cherry trees. This means you'll get a healthy, productive tree that's more manageable in size (typically around 3.5-5.5 meters tall) than a full-sized standard. Colt offers good anchorage, adapts well to various soil types, and provides some resistance to common cherry diseases, leading to a robust and long-lived tree that often starts fruiting earlier. It's ideal for larger gardens or orchards where you want a substantial yet easier-to-manage cherry tree.
