This workshop is perfect for beginners and seasoned gardeners alike, offering you the chance to learn the ancient art of grafting and take home your very own self-grafted trees.

This short, hands-on course at Edible Gardens is designed for beginners and anyone who wants to better understand how to care for newly planted and young fruit trees.

During this course, we will cover:

- Understanding formative pruning: What it is, why we do it, and why the first few years are so important.

- When to prune: Understanding the difference between winter and summer pruning and how timing influences tree growth.

- Choosing the right tree structure: An introduction to open-centre and central-leader training systems.

- Making your first cuts: How to approach pruning a newly planted maiden tree and encourage the development of strong branches.

- Selecting your framework branches: Understanding branch angles, spacing and the importance of a strong tree structure.

- Understanding how trees respond to pruning: How pruning cuts influence new growth, branching and future fruit production.

- Common mistakes to avoid: Including excessive pruning, poorly positioned cuts and removing the wrong branches.

- Pruning tools and techniques: Choosing the right tools and making clean, accurate cuts.
