Maraval Sweetchestnut Bareroot

Maraval is an important high-yielding variety bred in 1986 by INRA (the French National Institute for Agricultural Research). Maraval is a hybrid of the European and Japanese chestnuts, which makes this sweet chestnut particularly disease-resistant and productive.

Like all sweet chestnuts, Maraval prefers slightly acidic soils, but overall it has few soil requirements.

The chestnuts are beautiful and very large, with a diameter of almost 4 cm. They store very well, even in dry and cold conditions.

The chestnuts typically ripen in the second week of October.

The leaves emerge quite early, which can sometimes lead to damage in areas particularly prone to late frosts.

Maraval flowers very profusely and can therefore effectively pollinate trees located some distance away (up to 70 m).

Maraval is also particularly interesting for the home gardener because the variety is self-fertile and can thus be planted as a single tree.
