This relatively new Californian walnut variety is characterized by its early yield, vigorous growth, tolerance to pests and diseases, and high-quality nuts. The Tulare walnut tree is also notable for its excellent yield when planted densely in hedgerows. The Tulare walnut has been successfully cultivated in Europe since 1995.

Tulare is a moderately vigorous, relatively small walnut tree that grows slightly taller than it is wide. It has a moderately robust and upright growth habit. The branch angle is less than 45°, making it well-suited for hedges or other high-density planting systems. The Tulare walnut tree typically reaches a height of 8 to 10 meters.

The Tulare walnut tree flowers late but still ripens mid-season earlier than Franquette. Because the Tulare variety flowers late, it is particularly resistant to late frosts and therefore low-risk.
